Here are a few guidelines to follow when completing your packet and writing your essay:

  1. Writing a good essay takes time. Be sure you meet the eligibility requirements (e.g. grade point average, etc.) before you begin to work on the Grant application/essay.
  2. Start early. Give yourself enough time to do a thorough job in preparing the essay. This may involve thinking about any community, school and/or church activities/involvement in which you have been participated.
  3. Read all the instructions before you begin the application process, pay attention to details, last name first on the application, black 12-inch font, double-spaced, etc.
  4. Write your letter and essay in a clear and concise manner. Put yourself in the essay reader’s shoes and evaluate if your essay merits a Grant award.
  5. Spell check, spell check, and spell check! Correct spelling and acceptable grammar can make or break an essay.
  6. Have someone objective (instructor, counselor or advisor, friend, etc.) proofread your essay for content and language usage. Ask your proofreader to look for points, such as “Has the essay question been answered?” “What adjustments could be made to sharpen the essay?” and “Are the grammar, punctuation, and spelling correct?”
  7. Presentation is important. Your essay should be presented in a neat and attractive format that is easy for the Committee to review.
  8.  Be honest. Attempts may be made to verify the information you have given.
  9. Keep your ideas focused on a positive note.
